Vaccine confidence in Ghana is high1 compared to other countries. The latest data we have for Ghana is from surveys conducted in 2023 which showed that 77% of people feel that vaccines are safe and 77% think they are effective. 66% of those surveyed said they believe it’s important for children to have vaccines.
Confidence in vaccines in Ghana has declined since the first surveys carried out there. In 2015, 94% of people felt that vaccines were safe while 90% thought they were effective. 95% said they believed it was important for children to have vaccines and 87% felt that vaccines were compatible with their religious beliefs.
Indeed, data collected between 2015 and 2023 in Ghana (visualised below) shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic there was a significant drop in vaccine confidence. Since then we have seen a steady increase across the index, indicating a shift towards pre-pandemic levels of confidence.
