The data contains responses to the VCP’s Vaccine Confidence Index, which explores perceptions towards the importance, safety, effectiveness, and compatibility of vaccines with beliefs using the following battery of questions: 

To what extent do you agree with the following statements?

• Vaccines are important for children to have
• Vaccines are safe
• Vaccines are effective
• Vaccines are compatible with my beliefs

The data contains the following variables:

• Country — country of survey
• Region — country region
• Gender — respondent gender
• Age — respondent age
• Income — respondent income quintile
• Income_grouped — grouped income
• Education — respondent highest level of education
• Education_group — grouped education
• Religion — respondent religion
• VaxImpChild — respondent answer to “I think vaccines are important for children to have”
• VaxEff — respondent answer to “I think vaccines are effective”
• VaxSaf — respondent answer to “I think vaccines are safe”
• VaxRel — respondent answer to “I think vaccines are compatible with my religious beliefs”
• Weight — design-based survey weight
• Set — survey code
• Year — year of survey.

The data also includes a variable related to one further VCI question, ‘VaxImpAll’ — respondent answer to “I think vaccines are important for people of all ages.” This was asked in only some (not all) data collections. Therefore, it is not featured in our interactive map.

Answers to the five confidence questions are on a numeric scale. 1 == “Strongly agree”, 2 == “Tend to agree”, 3 == “Tend to disagree”, 4 == “Strongly disagree”, 5 == ‘Do not know’ (or no response provided). Codes above 5 denote missing values.

In 2018, the Wellcome Global Monitor also included three vaccine confidence items. These figures are included in the map, but the values may differ slightly to those reported by Wellcome due to differences in weighting procedures.

All data collections were conducted with nationally representative samples of the general population. However, please note that the regional estimates shown are not representative. The data is nationally-representative only and has not been subject to sub-national re-weighting procedures.
